Don, you are correct. No need to be humble about it. It is my understanding that Hardie has done the testing and have the approvals. But I have been known to be wrong - just ask my ex. I have seen several projects in the Tampa area with direct applied Hardie. These were multi-family done under engineering and architectural seal and that might have been the path to local code acceptance. And let me once again state for the record, I prefer to see it the "old fashioned way" - on furring. I am only pointing out that Hardie does allow/recommend this method of attachment in their literature.
